What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic (commonly genetic) disorder where the deposition of adipose (fatty) tissue accumulates in the legs, hips and buttocks and occasionally arms. It usually only affects women and is often misdiagnosed as obesity or ‘just being overweight’.

Many women go through life thinking they are ‘fat’ and all the dieting and/or starvation they may try does not reduce the size of the buttocks and legs. This can be very disheartening for most woman and they can suffer emotional problems and have a poor body image.

Lipoedema is a condition that mainly affects women and is characterised by a painful swelling in the legs, thighs and buttocks and sometimes the arms.

  • Lipoedema occurs because of the abnormal accumulation of fat under the skin.

  • If you have lipoedema your legs become swollen, bruise easily, are tender and feel painful and uncomfortable.

  • Lipoedema may occur because of changes in female hormones.

  • The most common time of onset is around puberty or when there are other hormonal shifts such as during pregnancy and menopause.

  • You are at greater risk of developing lipoedema if other women in your family are affected.

  • Treatment includes changes to the composition of your diet, use of compression stockings, bandaging affected areas, low-impact exercise, massage and water-based activities.

  • Specialised liposuction for lipoedema can assist when other treatments have not been effective.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a specific type of gentle massage that is used to stimulate lymphatic flow thus helping reduce oedema (fluid build up). It is also useful to reduce plain and discomfort, it is most effective when combined with other treatments such as compression bandaging and/or compression garments.

Compression

Specially made support socks, stockings, tights or garments. Wearing compression hosiery is the single most effective way of slowing down or preventing worsening symptoms. Compression garments encourage the flow of blood and lymph fluid within the lymphatic system which helps prevent fluid retention/oedema in the tissues and onset of Lymphoedema. In addition fluid within the tissues is encouraged to move towards the root of the limb, where it can be drained away more easily. Therefore wearing compression garments will hopefully stop the progression of Lipoedema into Lipo-lymphoedema.

Compression therapy may also reduce the level of pain and discomfort often experienced in the limbs by supporting soft tissues and painful knee joints. In addition, they provide support to the loose connective tissues and help improve appearance, streamline and redefine the shape of the limbs.

We provide an in house service for compression garments.
