Setting Boundaries and Self-Care After Cancer

I've been engaged in some thought-provoking conversations with a few of my clients regarding the concept of boundaries. We've been discussing the challenges they face when it comes to others' opinions about their decision for their health, what they should or shouldn't be doing. This ranges from people recommending you try what they’re cousin did to cure their cancer…. right through to advice about diet and going completely going sugar free!

As you probablyhave experienced, everyone seems to have an opinion. Well intentioned but not always helpful.

Life after cancer is a journey of self discovery, resilience and transformation. Thigs are different. You are different.

Survivors often emerge with a renewed sense of purpose, a fresh outlook on life and a heightened awareness if their own boundaries.

Embracing boundaries isn't always easy and if you are not always used to setting them it can FEEL harder but it is a crucial part of your healing process. It can be important at times to guard your energy and time so you can focus on emotional and physical healing during and after cancer treatment.

Here are 4 ways you can become better at setting boundaries:

1. Prioritise Self Care. Remember self care isn't selfish. It's a vital component of your wellbeing and helping you to reduce risk of cancer recurrence. Make time for activities that nurture your mind body and spirit.

2. Communicate Openly. Don't be afraid to expores your needs and limites to those around you. Honest communication helps others understand your boundaries and respect them! Start with small ways to set boundaries, by saying " no thank you" and work from there. Remember you do not owe anyone an explanation for your boundaries or preferences :)

3. Trust Your Instincts. Listen to your inner voice. If something doesn't feel right or align with your inner values, it's okay to say, "no". Trust your intuition - it's a powerful guide. Your journey is one-of-a-kind, and your instincts will be your trusted guide. Feel confident in your ability to make choices that genuinely resonate with your healing process.

4. Self- Reflect: Take time to reflect on yur cancer journey and what you have learned from your experience. Take it slow to heal, dont rush yourself to "feeling better" or "normal". When it comes down to being diagnosed and going through that process of healing, just know if can bring up other unhealed issues, not too mention its own level of trauma.
